Archbishop Cupich Celebrates Thanksgiving With ASV Artists And Other Catholic Charities Guests

Archbishop Blasé Cupich was the Special Guest at this year’s Thanksgiving Dinner celebration at Catholic Charities headquarters, 721 n. LaSalle Street in Chicago. Chicago’s new archbishop walked from table to table greeting the 150 dinner guests and blessing rosaries as they enjoyed the feast prepared by staff members and volunteers.

As reported by Michelle Manchir in the Chicago Tribune last Friday, Cupich wanted to share the message, “God wants all of us to love the life that has been given to us, and when we do that then we can love the lives of other people, no matter the circumstances.”

Manchir continued, “Cupich said he wanted to be present at the meal to help ‘turn the spotlight and the cameras on the work that’s being done here.’ Archbishop Cupich said, ‘That’s important for us as Chicagoans to realize that there is a chronic need day in and day out. What Catholic Charities does for people — it’s not just on Thanksgiving, it does every day.’ ”

Archbishop Cupich is seen in the photo below, as he learns more about ASV through the cards and ornaments sold at the event. May God bless the new Archbishop, in all of his work across our Archdiocese.

Classes Continue To Expand Photographers’ Vision

ASV photographers take their skill to the next level as they attend a Photography Training Seminar led by professional photographer Jody O’Connor. Photo Team members strive to help guests reach for new heights of imagination and creativity, as they learn more about the art of photography. They are most grateful for the effort made by all to attend classes, help others and enrich the ASV program. Happy Thanksgiving!

New ASV Season Gets Underway

After Supper Visions has begun offering regular photography classes to artists who are looking to advance their skills in this, the program’s 13th year.

Guests of the Catholic Charities Tuesday Night Suppers have been introduced to the program and invited to participate, free of charge. Those who have signed up have been given disposable, digital cameras. Approximately twenty of them have started meeting every Tuesday, with Volunteer Program Coordinators Jody O’Connor and Linda Roxe, to study all aspects of photography.

The classes include topics such as how a camera works, the impact of shadows and light on prints, plus the enjoyment and fulfillment that come from capturing an imaginative, memorable photo. Also discussed are inherent features of natural settings, such as reflections on water, that can give further beauty and dimension to photos taken from different angles at varying times of the day. The sessions often conclude with a group walk around the neighborhood, where real-life examples enrich the learning experience even more.

The goal is to help all artists grow in confidence and skill as photographers, using their unique talents and sense of creativity to seek and find what is interesting and beautiful to them in the world, and take a photo of it. Once the artists complete their rolls of film, the photos are developed, and each artist selects the prints that will be featured in the 13th Annual ASV Photography Exhibition, June 12-13, 2015 with the potential of participating in subsequent photo shows, as well.

All agree that the new classes, and the entire program continue to offer an incredible opportunity to gain valuable training and experience in the exciting world of photography, from professionals who love to share their passion for this fascinating form of art.

New ASV Event Starts Sunday

ASV is thrilled to be collaborating with the Chicago Photography Center to bring the work of ASV artists to its expansive community of art enthusiasts.

Over the past seven years, CPC volunteers have worked with over fifty adults who live in shelters or supported housing in Chicago. The volunteers plan monthly photo walks, discuss photography, critique each other’s work and hold an annual exhibit of CPC Outreach Photography.

This summer, CPC graciously is including the work of twenty-four ASV artists in this three week exhibition. It begins with a special Opening Reception this Sunday, July 20th, from 2-4PM at CPC, 621 W. Belmont. It is free and open to the public. Two photos from each of the twenty-four ASV artists will be on display and prints from both groups will be for sale.

CPC hosts a wide range of classes and workshops throughout the year, on the history, fundamentals and the business of photography. Meetings especially for women photographers and a camp for teens are featured this summer, as well. ASV is very grateful for the opportunity to be part of this signature event on Chicago’s Art Community calendar.

The Annual CPC Outreach Photography Exhibit, opening Sunday, July 20, 2014, from 2-4PM at 621 W. Belmont in Chicago.
