ASV artist Chester P. found a very polished look with his new suit to wear to the photo exhibition. While visiting Mary’s Closet, Chester said, “After seeing myself in the suit Mary’s Closet put together for me, I felt like I did when I was a young man, full of pride. My family won’t believe it’s me, when they see me all dressed up.”
ASV artist Andy A. found a terrific suit to wear to the photo exhibition. While visiting Mary’s Closet, Andy said, “Each year, ASV continues to get better. With Mary’s Closet dressing us for the exhibit, the artists truly feel special. I’m amazed how the coordinator of Mary’s Closet is always able to fit me perfectly with a suit I love, the very first time, each time that I’ve had the opportunity to visit.”
Andrea C. found a very professional suit to wear to the ASV Photo Exhibition. While visiting Mary’s Closet, Andrea said, “Wow, I truly feel I got the artist treatment in Mary’s Closet. The stylist worked to dress me for me…in a way that I’m comfortable with, without being judgmental. Way to go, Catholic Charities.”
ASV Photo Team volunteers are spending many hours together this week, meticulously cleaning, matting and framing the photographs chosen by each artist to be displayed in the June 8-10 photo exhibition. Seen below are ASV Co-Founder Ellen Gorney (left) with fellow volunteer Carolyn Winterfield.
All of the volunteers are excited to have so many new artists in this year’s show- 1/3 of the total participating. They also are surprised and pleased by the quality of the images taken by the new artists. The photographs reflect ideas presented in ASV photography classes regarding light, shadows and reflection, showing that the artists truly put into action what they learned in class.
Another terrific development this year has been the number of artists who have become skilled at editing their own photos, so their creativity and talent can continue to grow along with their knowledge of technology. The photos that will be unveiled to the public for the first time on June 8th will be the culmination of a great deal of work by all involved in the ASV program. Come experience this very special event!
The 74 artists participating in this year’s photo exhibition show great promise. Their talent, creativity and imagination have grown immensely through the winter and now final preparations are being made before their photographic artwork is introduced to the public June 8-10 at 721 N. LaSalle Street in Chicago.
For the artists, preparations include choosing which photos to display in the show, writing Artist Statements and having their individual portraits taken. The statements and portraits will be framed and hung alongside each artist’s photos. Photo Team volunteers are spending a great deal of time in these last three weeks carefully cleaning picture frames and meticulously framing each new photo to be displayed. With 74 artists and numerous photos per artist, it is a big job, one that many of these volunteers have joyfully done every year since the first ASV Photo Exhibition, 16 years ago.
Come see the extraordinary results of all of this hard work! The ASV Photo Exhibition is one of the most inspiring events on the Chicago art/civic calendar each summer. Join us, Friday, June 8 from 5-7PM, for the Opening Gallery Reception, with the exhibit continuing Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10 from NOON-2PM each day. We look forward to welcoming you to ASV 2018!

We only must tap into the very inter beings of our souls to awaken the art forms in us all. If you do not enjoy what you are doing you will never be good at it. By Luke Parker. If you don’t start somewhere, you’re gonna go nowhere. By Bob Marley. When you photograph people in color you photograph their clothes. When you photograph people in black and white you photograph their soul. Hippy Ted Grant

I enjoy taking pictures of nature. That’s why I chose four pictures of birds from my day at the zoo. I’m inspired by the colors, background, and beauty.

This is a photo catch of Chicago’s Rye. One of many beautiful aspects of architectural foundation. Look, see, wonder.

As I walked off the escalator at Harold Washington Library and caught sight of all those extraordinary dog tags, I thought of all the lives sacrificed. That in itself was enough to inspire me. The dog tags tell stories of men and women, some who lost lives and some MIA. My words cannot express how I felt when I took these photos. I can only say that my heart goes out to all those courageous men and women whom they represent.

I love this After Supper Visions event. It is very sobering experience for me. I get a chance to be productive while expressing my artistic ability. After being clean and sober for eight years, I am excited to be an active participant in something positive and creative. Thank you all for coming out and supporting and encouraging us in recreating our lives.
Andy A.
The day is to be a man’s job. I like to walk and see the Chicago waters.
John L.
I have been taking pictures for eight years and I am still in the pictures. I like being in it because it helps me calm down and be happy. I like taking pictures outside a lot, hot, snow, that what I like doing. It shows what best comes out of me.

Photography is a recording of expression. My expression is freelance; the ability to share a message, my message is peace and excitement.

A picture is worth a thousand words but I had nothing to do. Taking photos is a good hobby and I hope someone will like my talent.
James S.
I like the fact that I can learn about taking pictures and I hope I can continue to learn.

Um.. Hello, this is America.
You can salute the Flags.
You can pray like Mary.
You can roar like a lion.
You can soar and fly like an eagle.
Your call.

My photos reflect how I see the city of Chicago. My city is so beautiful in so many ways in how I see it.

I like to talk to others and see a new life Time is not good, I don have a job or home. Working for it all but pictures and the photo project are helping me to look up. Being with friends at the photo project has helped me.

The reason why I am writing this note is because I love to take nice pictures of buildings, cars, windows, animals and others too. Now, the reason why I take pictures is because it makes me feel good about myself. I need something positive to do. Photography is a nice thing to do, indoors and outdoors. Just holding a camera makes me feel special.
Sandra W.
When I am taking pictures of different things, I try to do the best I can. However, I take my time when I am shooting the pictures and find buildings and nice areas like parks and other clean places and community. Nevertheless, this is my first time being a photographer and it is very interesting and challenging. Therefore, I hope you all enjoy looking at my beautiful pictures. Thank you very much. P.S. I did my best.
Nathaniel G.
The photo class program gives you a chance to use your imagination to create an artistic way to express your feelings about photography. The reflections of my images, I tried to bring out the beauty of the world.
William R.
This is my seventh year in the photo show and I love to take pictures of trees and plants outdoors. I like how the shadows fall on the shot. My best picture is the tree with sunshine just on the front.
Jerry T.
My name is Ms. Sandra, I am pleased to see and continue my insight of the 2018 photos. Please enjoy.

“Great are the works of the LORD ; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious and majestic are His deeds, and His righteousness endures forever.” Psalm 111:2-3 I am always pondering the beauty of this world. The unique symmetry of each variety of flower, shrub or tree is breathtaking. I choose the Daffodils, the Azaleas, the exotic Scilla Peruviana, and the leaf of the Papaya tree to display in this year’s photo show. I hope that you enjoy these selections.
Marie H.
I love this project because it makes me feel proud taking pictures of doors, windows, plants, animals, and buildings. I do enjoy taking pictures; it makes me feel good about animals, plants, building, food, and myself.

Photography puts us in the Here and Now. It teaches us beauty, and therefore life itself is fleeting.
Vernon J.
It was winter and it had snowed for the first time of the season so I wanted to capture the Picasso in the snow.
William H.
I like the colors of my photos and their shapes; how they grow from the ground and blend it out.
Sheri H.
The Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier Chicago is awesome. I wanted everyone to know how it feels when you stand at the bottom of the stairs, excited and afraid to get on. So, I laid on the ground and took this picture, and then I ran away!
Sharon C.
The photo project has improved my creative and artistic expressions. My images are an expression of my creative side. Thanks to Catholic Charities for giving me a chance to become an artist.
Chester P.
When the light came this morning of this day God created a great view, it formed out to be a great picture, and that leaves a great memory in your mind.

As the saying goes: A picture is worth a thousand words. In other words, pictures can tell a story. Good or bad, happiness, sadness, whatever the story might be; a visual of what you are trying to say could help the story be told better.
Christopher D.
The one thing I love about art is that it is relaxing. I love nature, the flowers, plants and landscape. The two pictures of the landscape, the one with the water was in the Gurnee area. It is so beautiful up there! The second one was taken in McHenry County. The tulip picture was just a random one. I was caught in the rain, I thought, “wow, the water droplets on the tulip, this will make a great picture”. I hope that we, as humans, will not destroy the beauty of our Planet!
Andre C.
First, I would like to thank God for allowing me to grace the company of such loving people and their gracious hearts of compassion.
Catholic Charities After Supper Visions project has been a lifesaver for me. To view the world as it truly is in all its splendor. The chance to inspire is my middle name when it comes to photography. Thanks to all involved.
Ralph W.
I really enjoy the photo show.
Lamont S.
Feels exciting to be part of the photo project. I got a chance to create something to capture nature and it makes me feel more of a part of creation.

Children of a lesser God. Light a candle in the window until the morning light. Take hold of your dreams- hold them tight. The future of this world is in your hands. Carl Anderson 1991 (Judas-Jesus Christ Superstar).

It was a hard discussion to come up with all these very creative statements. It is the beauty a person can capture that gives me complete joy.

Like the quote by Tess Flanders “A picture is worth a thousand words”.

I spent the summer in Cedar Michigan last year, and the view at most everywhere I went was breathtaking, so here are some of the sights I would like to share.

I am so glad that there is that thing called After Supper Visions. I look forward to the show each year. It give me another reason to be a happy person. To see things and record them is magic. I am grateful that we can share this wonderful moment.

I started photography as a hobby and it turned into a passion. I find it fascinating to shoot a sunrise and a sunset. Noticing how the colors change as the sun rises in the early morning is like God creating his art. Nothing to me can replace photographing God at this best artwork.
