15th Annual ASV Photo Season Has Begun

Preparations for the 15th Annual ASV Photo Exhibition are officially underway! At a recent Tuesday afternoon class, Photo Team members Ellen Gorney, Jody O’Connor and Linda Roxe discussed photography basics with some of the artists who have signed on to participate this year. Some are returning artists, and some are joining for the very first time. Tips in these classes about photography subjects, lighting and use of creativity are a great help to the artists as they prepare to take their cameras out into the world, to capture special moments on film. Over the Fall and Winter, the artists will take their photos, then work with the Photo Team to choose which images they want to include in the photo exhibition next June. With Chicago’s world-class architecture and gorgeous natural settings, the possibilities are endless for beautiful, imaginative artwork to be created. Best of luck to all as the new ASV season begins!

ASV Photos Lauded At Gala Of The Arts

After Supper Visions was well-represented at last weekend’s Gala Of The Arts in Chicago, Catholic Charities’ signature event in the Navy Pier Ballroom raising funds for the Emergency Relief Fund. Attendees praised ASV artists for the professional caliber of their work and expressed astonishment that the photos were taken, in many cases, with disposable cameras.  What wonderful recognition for the artists, and for the volunteer ASV Photo Team that continues to work diligently on their behalf.

ASV Featured At Catholic Charities’ Gala of The Arts September 9th

EVENT WEBSITE

Impressive photographic artwork from the 2016 ASV collection will be featured alongside the work of local and nationally recognized artists at the 15th Annual Catholic Charities Gala of the Arts, Friday, September 9th at the historic Navy Pier Grand Ballroom.

Framed ASV 8×10 prints and a number of 11×14 prints will be on display and available for purchase, along with three 24×30 poster-sized prints, mounted and laminated. Orders will be taken for additional prints, with ASV artists benefitting from these purchases. Participation in the Gala is further affirmation that Chicago’s highly-esteemed art community continues to show sincere interest in and appreciation for the work of ASV artists. “The Gala committee chose artists’ prints from the 2016 Visions event that fit with their theme,” explains Kathy Donahue, Sr. Vice-President of Catholic Charities. “The ASV booth at the gala will sell framed prints and note cards and unframed prints from past shows, as well.”

Hundreds of Chicago’s civic and community leaders are expected to attend this glamorous event, while raising funds for Catholic Charities’ Emergency Relief Fund. The evening includes cocktails, dinner, dancing, raffle prizes and a spectacular Art Show and Sale. In honor of Frank Sinatra’s 100th Birthday year, this year’s Gala will feature a tribute to the music of the Rat Pack by Rich Daniels and the City Lights Orchestra, with special guest Ron Hawking.

Every thirty seconds someone turns to Catholic Charities for help and often it is the Emergency Relief Fund that is called upon for immediate assistance with heating bills, food or clothing. Ninety-two cents of every dollar donated goes directly to supporting those in need. For more information about attending the Gala of the Arts, go to www.catholiccharities.net.

Committee Members of the Chi-Town Jazz Festival joined volunteers and regular guests of the  Tuesday Night Supper on August 16th to make a very special presentation. While guests enjoyed dinner on this warm evening, Committee Member Eileen Lerum, who also is a member of the Catholic Charities Board of Advisors presented a check totaling over $11,000 to Monsignor Michael Boland, President, CEO and Administrator of Catholic Charities, and to Reverend Wayne Watts, Associate Administrator in support of Catholic Charities’ ongoing efforts to fight hunger. Jazz Musician Fr. John Moulder heads the Chi-Town Jazz Festival and the event kicked off earlier this year by performing for the Tuesday Night guests. This Tuesday, the guests responded with resounding applause to Lerum’s presentation. Catholic Charities is one of a number of charities receiving funds from the festival. Thank you, Eileen and everyone on the Festival Committee!

In The Artists’ Words

The artists had some wonderful insights to share last weekend at the ASV Photo Exhibition. Enjoy these inspiring thoughts from just a few of them:

Margaret A: (14th year)

“The After Supper Visions program has given me the opportunity to feel like somebody in this world. I love it.”

Ralph W. (1st year)

“This is my first year in the program. People show honest camaraderie in giving of their time to make this program work. It is a breath of fresh air. They show love from their heart for their fellow man. It’s a Godly thing.”

Kurt J. (4th year)

(Discussing his photo entitled, “Wrecked Tree”): “Nature does not destroy. It rearranges itself… This program is great. It helps me release my creativity.”

Cheryl H. (12th year)

(Regarding the ASV photo show): “It’s amazing to me. I love meeting different people and talking about my photos. It makes me happy.”

Gerald G. (10th year)

“I’m still trying. I’m still learning. Every year I see the work of someone else and say, ‘Why didn’t I try that?’ It makes me want to come back the next year and continue learning.”

Thank you to all who have purchased prints of the artists’ photos. Corporate interest continued to grow! Individual prints can be purchased through this website and, to purchase quantities of framed photos, please contact Katie Tuten, ktuten@catholiccharities.net, (312) 655-7003.
